Well, by my watch it’s recess. With the children all out on the playground we now have a few quiet moments to reflect on the first half of the legislative session. Depending on who you listen to, our Republican legislators are either “kooky“, a “laughing stock” or “buffoons“. You can believe Senator Bruce Tutvedt R-Kalispell that “We’re working and functioning well” or Senate Minority Leader Carol Williams D-Missoula that the first half of the session was “an extraordinary waste of time“. The state GOP presented bills to nullify every federal law except the law of gravity. They were busy telling the federal government what they can and cannot do in Montana as well as telling Montana counties and cities how to conduct their business. Republicans would make it okay to carry a concealed gun to school, church or your favorite pub, but for hunting you are better off with a sharp stick. They would take away your health care and your child’s education, tell you what is appropriate to smoke and would even tell Missoula the proper way to treat it’s own citizens.
Their state would be a place where officials can ignore U.S. laws, force FBI agents to get a sheriff’s OK before arresting anyone, ban abortions, limit sex education in schools and create armed citizen militias.
Yes, these are the folks you sent to Helena to come up with a state budget. And, you will pay dearly for their nonsense. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?
“It would be hard for anyone to top what is going on here in terms of the insanity of it all,” said Lawrence Pettit, a retired university president and author living in Helena. “One could be amused by it, except it is too dangerous.”
