Just so you know. James Bopp Jr. attorney of Terre Haute, IN was named Republican Lawyer of the Year for 2009 by the Republican National Lawyers Association. He has also been the general counsel for National Right to Life Committee since 1978. He wants to overturn limits on direct corporate contributions to political parties. So, it should come as no surprise that Bopp was the driving force behind Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission which unleashed unlimited corporate campaign spending on our country.
Bopp is also an RNC member and the chief sponsor of the ten-point conservative litmus test for Republican candidates to make sure that they are conservative enough to serve their party. He believes that, ”In just a few months, the goal of the Obama administration has become clear and obvious – to restructure American society along socialist ideals“. One of his long-term goals is to abolish all campaign spending rules.
“We had a 10-year plan to take all this down,” he said in an interview. “And if we do it right, I think we can pretty well dismantle the entire regulatory regime that is called campaign finance law.”
For his next performance, Bopp is targeting state campaign disclosure laws. His firm is currently representing anti-gay marriage groups in Washington, Maine and California with the aim of challenging laws requiring the public disclosure of the names of financial supporters. His argument is that making the names of donors public will expose them to harassment by opponents. One or more of these cases will likely wind up before the same conservative Supreme Court that just decided the Citizens United case. The end result would be that, not only will corporations have control of our elections, there would be no way for citizens to know who is donating the money and controlling election results.
Just letting you know so you can keep the name of James Bopp Jr. in your field of vision. Perk up your ears when you hear the name or see news stories about these cases if you are worried about infringement of the first amendment rights of real flesh-and-blood people. These people exist. They want control of your rights and they don’t take vacations.
