Reform Renounced

So, that’s it then. President Obama is ready to throw the public option under the bus and along with it, any serious discussion of health care reform. By giving in to hate speech and bumper-sticker rhetoric, the administration will condemn the country to years of tea party politics and town hall trash talk. If it works on health care reform, you will see the same gun-toting, repulsive, pompous asses on the teevee using these tactics to oppose every piece of legislation from now on.

We will drop the public option before even a single bill has passed either house and then during conference, opponents will be allowed to strip away any and all of the other provisions that even resemble actual reform. There can be no health care reform without a serious public option. Howard Dean got it right when he said, “If you’re not going to have a public option, don’t pretend you’re doing health reform”. We have decided to not even make a pretense of any serious attempt to rein in runaway health costs. Republicans have indicated that they might accept a bill with a public option trigger such as, “When Hell Freezes Over“. Instead of real reform, we will waggle our finger at the health insurance companies and scold them severely. “Naughty, Naughty”.

  1. I think Neil gets it essentially right here. Not that folks on ‘our’ side should let up — but the twin dangers of despair and taking-my-ball-and-going-home are real, and we’ve seen them both kill a lot of progression over much of the last two decades.

  2. Trial balloon.

I don’t like the trigger idea either, but it is better than nothing.

    • Thanks Charley. I guess my fear is that we could be relying on the next administration to implement the trigger and that might be the same people who thought up “Death Panels”. If 47 million uninsured, 25 million underinsured and 20% per year premium increases isn’t a trigger to do something, I’m not sure what is.
